The Galaxy

108 star systems, 107 places to land and 139 hyperspace links between them. The map, the systems and the worlds used to be three separate pages, which meant three lookups to answer any question worth asking. A stellar object is not a thing on its own — it is something a system contains — so here it lives inside the system that holds it.

Interactive map

The positions are not an approximation — they are the coordinates the game itself uses to draw its map, so this is the shape of the galaxy exactly as a pilot sees it on the bridge. Big dots are systems with something to land on; small dots are open space. Colour is the government that claims the system. Click any system to open its record in the atlas below.

A hand-drawn map of the same galaxy. Not clickable, and its layout is an interpretation rather than the engine's coordinates, but far easier to read — and it shows two things ours cannot. The Serpens Nebula and the Trugati asteroid belt are regions the game names in prose but never stores as map data, so no amount of reading the resource fork will put them on a chart. Both names are the game's own words: landing on Darkstar, the beautiful Serpens Nebula can be seen drifting across the sky; Liberty Station refuels the ships that mine valuable ores from the floating debris of the Trugati asteroid belt.

Hand-drawn map of the Escape Velocity galaxy, with the Serpens Nebula to the east and the Trugati asteroid belt to the south.

One row per system, grouped by who claims it. Click a system to open its record, in the order you would actually need it: where you can jump from there, every world it holds with that world's services, market, missions and the game's own landing description, and last of all what else is flying around while you do it.

How we know what a shop stocks

The game does not store a stock list per world, and it is not simply everything at or below the world's tech level either — that would make every tech 5 shipyard identical, which they plainly are not. Availability is a pair of conditions, and an item appears if either holds: its tech level is at or below the world's, or its tech level matches one of the eight special tech slots the world carries.

That second condition is the whole story. Rebel warships carry tech 5000 and the only 5000 slot in the galaxy is on Palshife. Confederate warships carry 5001 and the only one is on Luna. The cheap Kestrel carries 250 and the only slot is on Blackthorne — which is exactly where everyone remembers buying it. Items at tech 9999 match no slot anywhere, which is why nothing sells them.

A handful of ships and outfits add a mission condition on top; those are marked with an asterisk. All of it comes out of the game's own resource fork, the same dump every other number on this site comes from — no fan guide documents shop stock, because it was never published as a list. It is derived, and now it is derived here.

Where the missions are

Only 47 of the game's 109 missions are offered by a particular world, spread across 23 systems. The other 62 come off the mission computer and belong to no place at all, so a system showing no jobs here is not a system with nothing to do — it is a system with nothing bespoke. The full list is on the missions page.
