Links
A fan site with no outbound links is a dead end, and this corner of the web is small enough that everyone should be pointing at everyone else. Here is where the rest of it lives.
Play the games
Two routes, and our own page walks through both: run the original on an emulated Macintosh, or run the same galaxy on the EV Nova engine, which still has builds for current machines.
- escape-velocity.games — the one to know about. It maintains the Nova engine downloads and hosts the community's total conversions, including EV Classic and EV Override rebuilt for Nova, so you can play the 1996 galaxy without emulating anything.
- EV Nova: Community Edition — the maintained fork of the Nova engine, with current Windows builds. On Linux it runs under Wine; WineHQ keeps an entry for it.
- Macintosh Garden — Escape Velocity — the game itself (v1.0.2 to 1.0.5), plus Escape_Velocity_Manual.pdf and the Escape Velocity Resource Bible. Start here.
- Macintosh Repository and My Abandonware — mirrors, if the Garden is down.
- Internet Archive — EV/EVO/EVN plug-in collection — every plug-in Ambrosia ever hosted, in one place.
- You will need an emulator: SheepShaver for PowerPC or Basilisk II for 68k.
Documentation and guides
- The Ultimate Unofficial Escape Velocity Guide by Amar Kishan (v2.6, 2001) — the most complete single text guide that survives. Used on this site as a tiebreaker whenever the game data and Ambrosia's own guides disagree.
- ironyisntdead's galaxy map — a hand-drawn map of the whole galaxy.
-
vasi/evnova-utils — Dave Vasilevsky's tools
for reading EV data files. Its
Context/folder holds resource dumps of all three games, which is where every number on this site ultimately comes from. - The original escape-velocity.com, via the Wayback Machine. Long dead. We are slowly restoring it — see the EV Classic section.
Community and reference
- Ambrosia Garden — where the community ended up after Ambrosia closed. Still active.
- The Escape Velocity Discord — the fastest place to get help making any of this run.
- r/Escape_Velocity — quiet, but it exists.
- The EV Nova Wiki — covers all three games, though you have to watch for pages that quietly mix Nova's numbers into EV1 entries.
- Ambrosia Software forum archive — the old webboards, rescued in 2019.
- Hardcore Gaming 101 — Escape Velocity — a good retrospective on the series.
- The original press release, May 5th 1996.
